Got my DC10, tried premier, went wobbly, stuck to Studio, very easy and fun. I'm still investigating at the moment.

You could get a mac, but only if it's raining.

I teach media production and work in a lab with about 18 G4s. I see them crash and have other issues with premiere and after effects as often as my PC at home.

If you have a digital camera with firewire you will not need a capture card like the DC10 or whatever. Just get a firewire card and you can import through it. Not sure about prices where you are at but I have seen them for $100US many times.

Definately get as much RAM as you can get the cash for. You can get 256 sdram chips again for about $100US right now.
